Philip Noakes, Master Jeweller and Silversmith and Claire Townsend, Contemporary Jeweller established Contemporary Metal in late 2012. Our aim was to create a place for skills based learning and promotion of contemporary jewellery in Western Australia. We are a fully equipped workshop for students and practicing Jewellers and Silversmiths.
Early in our history, we co-ordinated ‘A Year in the Making’, which gathered 12 contemporary jewellers to make 12 objects, each with a different theme over a 12 month period. The artistic pieces created as a result of this collaboration are exhibiting on tour until mid 2018.
Claire left us in early 2016, when she relocated to the Eastern States with her family. Since then, we have bought and renovated a premise in Osborne Park to create a modern studio for our jewellery making and silversmithing students and practitioners.
We collaborate with a wide range of local, interstate and international individuals and organisations to enhance the craft of contemporary jewellery and silversmithing in Western Australia. A range of workshops are held each year with visiting jewellers on specific aspects of jewellery making or silversmithing, such as enamelling and design.
